RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi police on Saturday claimed to have arrested the killers of Additional District and Sessions Judge Tahir Khan Niazi but failed to give details about the motive behind the murder.

Mr Niazi was killed in his house at Satellite Town on August 5.

“We have arrested three killers of the judge but further investigations will reveal the motive behind the murder,” Regional Police Officer (RPO) Mohammad Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja told a press conference at his office on Saturday.

He identified the alleged killers as Fayyaz, a resident of Lahore; Amir Bhatti, of Sialkot, and Rashid, of Chak Jalalddin, Rawalpindi.

The RPO said the culprits entered the house of the judge in the limits of the Sadiqabad police apparently for robbery and fled after killing the judge. He said the police formed special teams to investigate the case, adding that the three suspects were traced through their mobile phone data. However, the RPO did not disclose the place from where the police picked the suspects.

“After using information technology (IT) and the mobile phone data of the suspects, we found that they were involved in the crime.” He said the prize money of Rs1.7 million announced for anyone providing information about the killers would be distributed among the police officials who traced the alleged killers.

About the inclusion of the anti-terrorism act (ATC) sections in the case, the RPO said the police were consulting legal experts in this regard.

He said further investigations would continue in the case after getting physical remand of the arrested men.
