PESHAWAR: An inquiry has been ordered into recovery of a large number of new textbooks from the warehouse of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board (KPTB).

The government has formed a committee to investigate the presence of stock of new books in the warehouse. It found that books meant for free of cost distribution among the student of primary, middle and high schools had been stored along with old books.

“We have ordered an inquiry and the committee will file its report concerning the presence of new books in the warehouse designated for storing old books. The new books were concealed allegedly to be sold in the market,” Qaisar Alam Khan, acting chairman of the KP Textbook Board, told a press conference at his office.

He said that they had initially found about 85,000 books in the warehouse after an inquiry was initiated on the orders of the education minister and KP Ehtesab Commission to look into the disappearance of the books and expose those found involved in the scam.

“We have stopped the storekeeper and three others from work,” he said, adding that verification of the books was being carried out to ascertain the exact number of books and the people behind the fraud.
