LAHORE: Likely large-scale objections to delimitation of local areas involving litigation is reported to be a hurdle in the way of local body elections scheduled to be held in September in Punjab.
According to officials on Sunday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which has already approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan for extending the date of the elections, had completed the delimitation on July 28. But it was yet to make public the delimitation.
They said as per the procedure, after declaring the delimitation, the ECP was required to invite public objections and suggestions on it. A decision on such objections or suggestions is to be made by the delimitation authority of the ECP.
Those not satisfied by the decisions would approach the LHiC and this process would take quite some time in view of the expected large-scale appeals, officials said.
They said people could file appeals in the LHC after the announcement of the election schedule but this would make it complicated for the ECP to hold elections. “It looks the elections are going to be delayed due to this very reason if not due to floods in the province,” an official said.
