In a survey study at restaurants, a researcher with the US Food and Drug Administration found that attractive servers earned, on average, $1,261 more annually in tips than their unattractive counterparts, an effect that apparently was mainly due to female customers’ giving bigger tips to attractive waitresses. The reason was simple: Customers prefer attractive servers over unattractive servers, says the researcher, Matt Parrett. Past studies have shown that a woman’s appearance evokes stronger reactions than a man’s.
