ISLAMABAD: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was accorded a red carpet welcome on Saturday when he made a brief stopover here on his way back to his country from Indonesia.

As the Turkish president landed at the Nur Khan Airbase along with his spouse and delegation, he was received by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Begum Kulsoom Nawaz. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Adviser to PM on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi, Maryam Nawaz and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry were also present.

Clad in traditional dresses, a boy and a girl presented bouquets to the Turkish leader. He was saluted by the static guards of Pakistan Air Force.

Later, President Erdogan and PM Sharif held a one-to-one meeting to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations, besides global and international issues of mutual interest.

This was Mr Erdogan’s seventh visit to Pakistan in the past 10 years, signifying substantial growth and strengthening of relations between the two countries under his government.
