SAHIWAL: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated on Friday work on the 1,320 megawatt coal power plant in Qadirabad, which according to him, will be operational by Dec 25, 2017.

The plant is being built with the cooperation of China.

Mr Sharif said China was a time-tested friend of Pakistan and the Chinese $43 billion investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor would create jobs and bring prosperity to the country.

He said the sit-in and a confrontation by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf had delayed work on several mega projects. He said confrontational politics did not lead to development and prosperity.

After provocative remarks, he called for a ceasefire: “Now is the time to leave behind confrontation and move ahead.” He invited other political parties to work with the government for prosperity and progress of the country.

As environmentalists have raised their concerns over coal-fired projects, Mr Sharif said no pollution would be caused by the coal power plant as, according to him, a third generation boilers’ critical technology was being used in the plant.
