ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) handed over 66 slum dwellers to the police on physical remand for ‘obstructing the anti-encroachment operation’ in Sector I-11.
ATC Judge Sohail Ikram remanded them to the police custody till August 4. The police produced 66 people before the ATC on Friday and sought their physical demand.
The slum dwellers were accused of pelting the police and officials of the local administration with stones during the ongoing anti-encroachment operation.
The police have registered cases against 2,000 slum dwellers for creating hurdles during the operation.
The police requested the court to grant physical remand of the accused for five days. The court, however, granted the physical remand for four days and adjourned the hearing.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on June 26 submitted a plan for removal of illegal slums from Islamabad in four phases. I-11 operation was part of that plan.
