ISLAMABAD: Pakistan bagged five medals on Tuesday at the ongoing Special Olympics World Games being staged at Los Angeles.

Pakistan women athletes bagged a silver in swimming, along with a couple in cycling whilst two men cyclists claimed bronze, according to a news release issued here.

Swimmer Aqsa Ahmed Janjua won the first medal when she finished second to China’s Luo Xiau Chun in the 50m freestyle. Skrij Ema of Slovenia was third.

Cyclist Mehmona Hussain then finished second to India’s Meera Kumari in the 500m race, with time of 1:15.72, fractionally behind the Indian’s 1:14.58.

Khadija Irfan also bagged silver in the 500m time trial with a time of 2:23.44.

Their achievements were followed by Salman Siddiqui and Usman Saeed who bagged bronze in 500m race and the 500m time trial respectively.

Pakistan’s basketball team got their campaign off to a winning start, beating Portugal 23-10 in their first round-robin division three match. Other two teams in the group are Israel and Poland.

Mohammad Usman was unstoppable during the match, earning 12 points with Waheedur Rehman (5), Zahid Muhammed Abuzar (4) and Akhtar Ali Khatak (2) amongst other notable scorers.
