RAWALPINDI: An unemployed man shot and injured his estranged wife and then killed himself outside the house of his in-laws at Tench Bhatta on Tuesday.

Asghar Ali married Amber Kanwal about 10 years ago and the couple had three children. But he was in distress after his wife returned to her parents’ house and moved a court seeking divorce.

“Quarrelling with his wife was his habit that forced my sister to go to the court for divorce,” Abdul Latif, a brother of the woman, told Dawn.

He said on Tuesday his sister carrying her 11-month-old daughter was standing in the street outside her parents’ house when her husband reached there and shot her.

“Asghar fired three bullets at his wife though two of them missed and pierced into the wall. The third one hit and injured her. Her daughter, Ayesha, however, remained unhurt.” Later, Asghar shot himself dead on the spot.

Mr Latif claimed that two unidentified men were accompanying his brother-in-law who later escaped.

Amber, 23, in her statement recorded with the police said since she returned to her parents’ house and filed a case with the court for divorce, her husband had been trying to convince her to return to his house.

The injured was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital by Rescue 1122 where she was operated upon. According to the doctors, the injured was in a critical condition.
