MUZAFFARGARH: Breaches occurred in the Zamindara dyke on Monday after the flood peak of the Chenab and the Indus headed towards Alipur and Jatoi tehsils, forcing hundreds of families to vacate their houses.

District officials said dozens of Muzaffargarh tehsil villages were flooded by the Chenab while water did not recede in outskirts of the city. The Shehr Sultan embankment seemed to be at high risk as people had been told to vacate their homes.

In Alipur tehsil when the Zamindara spur developed breaches, more than 5,000 people had to leave their homes immediately. There is shortage of food items such as milk and vegetables and now some areas of Alipur are cut off from Muzaffargarh city. Around 10,000 to 20,000 people are waiting for relief.

The district coordination officer said soon his team would assess the loss of houses and crops.

Reports reaching here suggest that 60 more villages will face flood water in case Sarki and langer Wah spurs breached. The flood water is flowing to Khangarh Doma and Seetpur city as the district administration had announced vacating the two areas where more than 25,000 families are living.

The affected people have alleged that the district government is providing relief in city area alone. “The boatmen are charging Rs150 to Rs200 per head to cross the bridge,” one of the flood-tossed villagers said.

DCO Hafiz Shaukat Ali said: “Relief camps in every tehsil have been set up where medicines and food items are being given to the affected families.”

encounter: A wanted criminal with a bounty of Rs1 million on his head was allegedly killed accidentally by his accomplices during an encounter on Monday morning in Kundai, 150km from the city, police claimed.

Khaliq Jattani, ringleader of the Jattani gang, was involved in kidnappings, murders and robberies and over 40 cases of heinous crimes had been registered in three districts against him. He was also involved, along with Jaka gang, in the kidnapping of two boys who were recently recovered.

Talking to Dawn, District Police Officer (DPO) Awais Ahmad claimed Jattani was planning robberies and dacoities with his accomplices on the river bank of the Chenab. When a police patrol passed by, the suspects opened fire on them that was retaliated.

During the crossfire, Jattani was allegedly accidentally killed by his accomplices who jumped into the Chenab to flee, the DPO claimed.

Police chased the suspects but they managed to escape. Police then took the body to Alipur THQ where he was identified as Jattani. The DPO said the deceased had a head money of Rs1 million on him.
