Executions resume this week

RAWALPINDI: The executions of condemned prisoners will begin once again on Thursday, with six being hanged in Central Jail Adiala for non-terrorism related offenses.

Executions of convicted prisoners had been suspended by the federal government on June 13 in respect of the holy month of Ramazan, to be resumed after Eidul Fitr.

According to security sources, three convicted prisoners will be hanged on Thursday, two will be executed on Friday and another on Wednesday, next week.

Inspector General Punjab Prisons Farooq Nazir confirmed that executions which had been stopped because of Ramazan would be resumed from next week. Death warrants of all six prisoners were issued following dismissal of mercy appeals by the apex court and the president of Pakistan.

Among the six convicted prisoners is Muhammad Aslam, arrested by the police for his involvement in a murder case in Choa Saidan Shah Chakwal in 2001. Since his death warrants were issued by the concerned court of law, his last meeting with his family is being arranged by jail authorities.

Mohammad Irshad, a convicted prisoner in a murder case registered on August 11, 2004 with the Chontra Police will be executed on July 30. Jahandad Khan was arrested by the Chontra police in a murder case on April 24, 2002. His death warrants were issued after all his mercy appeals were rejected and efforts to reach a compromise with the victims heirs failed.

Ikhlaq Ahmed was convicted in a murder case registered with the Hassanabdal police on May 19, 2000 and will also be executed on Thursday.

Muhammad Ashraf was convicted in a case registered with the Wah Cantonment police on April 8, 2000 and will be executed at Adiala Jail on July 31, 2015.

Zafar Iqbal will be executed at Adiala on July 31, 2015. He was arrested by the Mandra police on May 15, 2000.

The last man to be executed at Adiala before the beginning of the holy month of Ramazan was Khan Bahadur of Malakand convicted in a murder case registered with the Waris Khan Police Station on September 15, 1997. He was hanged on May 27.
