PCB step to deprive Karachi players of exposure: Nadeem Omar

KARACHI: Prominent sports promoter and owner of Omar Associates cricket team Nadeem Omar has expressed his reservations over Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to cut down Karachi’s representation in first-class cricket to just one team instead of two in the newly-formed domestic cricket structure.
In a statement released on Monday, Nadeem lamented that Karachi’s case was not properly fought by the region’s representative in the meeting where the city’s fate was decided along with that of Lahore.
“Despite having the largest population and being the biggest cricket nursery in the country, Karachi has been meted out poor treatment by the PCB in its new structure for domestic cricket,” said Nadeem.
“The Karachi region players are unlikely to get the opportunities to showcase their talent if only one outfit from the metropolis is allowed to compete.”
It should be mentioned here that both Karachi and Lahore will only be allowed to field just one team each in the upcoming regional qualifiers and there is no guarantee that if either team gets relegated next year, the two regions will still have any representation in first-class cricket at all.
“Also, a number of Karachi players will be playing qualifiers for the departments and if those departments failed to qualify, the same set of players will be eligible to play for the region which will deprive many of the young and upcoming players of the required exposure,” Nadeem pointed out.
He stressed that the services of Karachi and Lahore as cricketing nurseries should not be overlooked as they have given lot of great players to Pakistan and that tradition should continue by giving them their fair bit of opportunities and rights.

Equal representation for all teams also means more competition. Perhaps this way the 'cream' will rise.
I may be wrong, but I would rather see one really strong Karachi side than two mediocre Dolphin and Zebra sides.

Can anyone explain why PCB has taken such a decision which is detrimental to young cricketers?
Could operating costs have some basis for this limited number? And why is it that PCB has over THIRTY admins doing absolutely nothing in terms of public relations on their website? PCB PR office could at least post videos from PTV and other TV channels which air cricket legends as well as highlights from major matches.
The PCB website is pathetically mediocre, the least it could do is revamp it and perhaps follow what some other nation's cricket sites are doing ... which is a great deal more professional then PCB's website. When Pakistan's leaders interfere in PCB's management then this will be the result - poor execution by unqualified non cricket employees.

@D_Hussain I agree. Its the same choice of selecting the best team for Pakistan. We do not have two teams representing Pakistan at the same time, so it be the case for any city. This competition is more tough for selecting 11 players for Pakistan than for Karachi or Lahore. I would request Karachi and Lahore to produce one best team, this can reduce chances of second tier players and hence will encourage players in the team who deserves to be there.

Why would you need two teams from Karachi anyway? It's not about population numbers, it's about quality. This way cricketers would have to work harder to make their way up the domestic circuit

Mr. Nadeem Omar's comments (or the way they have been reported) create the impression that this decision is biased against Karachi, whereas it applies equally to Lahore and all the other cities. Also I personally support one best team from each city/region. Good decision by PCB.

Why Karachi is being equated with Lahore. Karachi is more than twice the population of Lahore and should have in fact more than two teams. Does any one remember the dastardly principle of parity whereby the East Pakistan majority was made equal to the west Pakistan minority. When would these bias laden policies end. If it was Karachi's representatives who sold it short then they should be taken to task.

I back this decision of PCB. Our cricket structure needs Quality instead of Quantity. In my view teams should be further reduced and should be no greater than 8. Best players should compete in First class cricket. Other teams can be accommodated in Lower level of cricket like Grade II, or city level club cricket.

start cricket in your respective districts, ie have maybe 8 teams within karachi/lahore compete against each other. Choose the best 11 to represent your city.
Nothing wrong with PCB's move. Its good for cricket.

@D_Hussain and @AH: The Dolphins and Zebras that Karachi has produced is by far the best when compared to teams produced by smaller cities.
Another thing, Karachi has a population of over 2o millions which almost equals population of 5xQuetta city (for instance).

Javed Miandad, Hanif Mohammed are in ICC legends list, Salahuddin , Hassan Sardar , Mohammed Hanif , Sohail Abbas in Hockey not to forget Jahangir Khan who is also from Karachi.

I didn't expect such a comment from Nadeem Omar. He is a literate guy and should know that Lahore too has only one team. I am from Karachi but I believe the reason why Karachi is doing badly domestically and not producing enough international talent is that we have two lousy teams. With one team players would compete more for each and every spot.

This is not new. In all aspects current govt singling out people of karachi or their elected political party. This is open discrimination. Pakistan number one player fawad ALam is still out from the team. He contained best averages in One day and Test Format but out from both format.

what is the population of Lahore and Karachi ? Karachi definitely qualifies for two teams with a population of over 2 MN and also host to upcountry playerss like Yunis Khan and Afridi in the past

Good idea to limit the number of teams. Cream will rise to the top. Only best 11 should be selected out of the region. Look at Australia, they have 6 teams for the country of that size. Yet their first class teams can beat the crap out of Pakistan National side.

Why is this so surprising. Karachi cricket player should apply to Afghanistan, Nepal and UAE cricket teams to become a part of their squad. Pakistani cricketers are already playing in South Africa, Australia and England.
