Australia lifts ban on import of Pakistani mangoes

ISLAMABAD: Australian government lifted the ban placed on the import of Pakistani mangoes and the traders will now be able to export fresh mangoes to Australia.
The ban was imposed after flies and bugs were found in Pakistani mangoes consignment sent to Australia last year.
The mangoes will now be exported after treating them with irradiation or hot water dip.
"Australia has amended its import conditions to enable the export of fresh Pakistani mangoes to Australia after they have been irradiated for fruit flies and mealy bugs," Faizan Haq a spokesman for Australian High commission in Islamabad told Dawn.com.
The spokesman said the amended import conditions mean that mangoes for Australia from Pakistan are now able to be treated with either irradiation or the current hot water dip treatment.
Importers in Australia may now apply for an import permit for irradiated mangoes from Pakistan, he added.
The new measure will see Pakistan mangoes more widely available in the Australian marketplace for Australians to enjoy.
Amended import conditions will apply to all potential Pakistani exporters of irradiated fresh mangoes.

I was talking to my daughter in Oslo Norway and I asked what are you eating, Mangoes very delicious from Pakistan, I bought a box today for 112 Krones and I thought the box may be containing 5kg but she said there are six pieces. Good source os foreign exchange.

Pakistani Mangoes..Awar Atool were sent to the US. Price was $28 for 6 mangoes. The mangoes from Haiti, Mexico and other Caribbean nations may not be as good but they cot $7 per 8 Mangoes and the quality is very and getting better.
A westerner cannot discern the difference between the taste. Mangoes are an acquired taste so what a Pakistani thinks is a great mango is not true for others.
Bottom line is that study after study has determined that the cost of exporting mangoes from the Sub-Continent is too high!

Pakistani mangoes are not allowed to be irradiated in Pakistan and they are first treated in a facility in US. That makes them more expensive and it also decreases their shelf life. India on the other hand is allowed to treat its mangoes.

Why all the focus on mangos? The entire Worldwide sales volume of Pakistan mangos would be considered a modest sized business. Further - the mango producers are too cheap to even buy irradiation equipment which locks them out of the USA market which is significantly larger than your other target markets combined.

Great news for people of Australia as well as Pakistani orgin people living there.
How about the availability of Pakistani mangos in the U.S.?
In fact, when Hillary Clinton was Secreatary of State, she loved eating Pakistani mangos and promised to streamline the process of getting them imported into the U.S. What happened to those promises? We miss Pakistani "Langra, Anwar Ratol and Dosehhry" mangos in the U.S. and are forced to eat tasteless, odorless and lousy Mexican mangos.

Have to do more on pricing and marketing. Last year they were for sale for $40-$50 a carton (10 pieces only/carton) at only a few desi shops. Other varieties are available at $1-$1.50 a piece at any major grocery store (though the taste is not so good), but price wise making Pakistani mangoes highly unattractive.

@Nadeem Yes, they are available in USA in Indian stores but don't think they can compete on price as a dozen costs about $ 20 while the ones from Mexico costs around $ 7. Taste wise they are similar.

Fruit Fly eggs cannot be eradicated from Mangoes with Hot water treatment. The only solution is Vapor heat treatment.

Pakistani mangoes are the best in world and I am enjoying them here in the UK. Chonsa is the king of mangoes. I have tried indian mangoes (kesar and alfonso) as well but none tastes as sweet and refreshing as chonsa.

Very good for Pakistani farmers. If your government is really serious and honest then they have 60 times more market than Australian just next to their doors, India. Trade with India would help Pakistan to resolve their economical crises and international debt.
Although common Pakistani wants to have trade with India, shortsighted establishment is not ready to open the doors for India despite India has given Pakistan the most favored nation.

The more we globally trade, the better we learn to improve the standards of exporting goods. From my point of view, it's okay to identify flaw (if any), so in future it would be set in accordance to the foreign demand and strengthen our long-term relations.
