LAKKI MARWAT: The district chapter of JUI-F failed to reach a consensus over the nomination of candidates for the top slots of tehsil and district governments, prompting the central party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to intervene.

A local party leader said Mr Rehman called party MPAs from the district, including Anwar Hayat, Noor Salim and Munawar Khan, members of district shura and candidates wishing to become nazims to Islamabad, and listened to their suggestions regarding formation of local governments in the district.

He said Mr Rehman’s meetings with party leaders would help bury differences in the local party ranks.

He said the district office bearers also authorised Mr Rehman to nominate the candidates for the slots of district and tehsil nazims and deputy nazims, adding he would announce the names of aspirants in the next couple of weeks.

In May 30 local body elections, JUI-F emerged as the single largest party as it secured maximum seats in the district and tehsil councils.

The newly elected councillors started contacting party leaders to become nazims and deputy nazims.

But their efforts proved futile as the party’s district chapter divided over nomination of candidates for the posts of district and tehsil nazims and deputy nazims. The party held several meetings at local level to finalise the names, but to no avail.

According to a party leader, local Khans who had joined JUI-F few years back wanted their men to be made district and tehsil nazims, but the religious elements of the party opposed the move.   

GUNNED DOWN: Two people were gunned down in separate incidents, while body of an unknown woman was found on roadside, police said on Monday.

In a kill-and-run incident in Goraka Dilasa Shah village, Shafiur Rehman, Mohammad Rehman and Riaz shot dead Rehmadullah Jan and escaped. The Ghaznikhel police registered a case and began investigations.

Police said a blood feud between the deceased and the killers had been settled recently.

In another incident a young man was shot dead over a minor dispute in Kotka Kakijan village.

According to police, Syed Nawaz shot and injured Raqiaz with a pistol and escaped. The injured was taken to a hospital in Naurang town wherefrom he was referred to Bannu in critical condition. But, he succumbed on the way. Police registered a case and began investigations.

Meanwhile, people spotted a body of woman lying on roadside in Asmatabad Ghaznikhel area and informed police, which shifted it a hospital in Titterkhel for autopsy. Police said the body of woman, about 70, bore no torture marks.
