BAHAWALPUR: The district police claim to have arrested under Section 11 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 13 people for allegedly collecting donations for banned outfits and politico-religious parties across the district.

Among those arrested, Muhammad Amin, Abdul Jabbar and Tariq were rounded up from various places in the city. Police also seized their donation boxes and locked them up in Kotwali police station.

Officials reiterated that the collection of funds was illegal and those involved would be arrested.

Meanwhile, Bahawalpur anti-terrorism court Judge Khalid Arshad awarded a sentence of one and a half years along with a fine of Rs130,000 to Qari Rashid Ahmed, an alleged activist of a banned organisation, over collection of funds for his group, distribution and writing of hate material.

A challan was submitted to the anti-terrorism court by Haroonabad police.

STUDENTS: The Punjab government directed government colleges across the province to admit 10pc more students of their earlier strength fixed for intermediate classes from the next academic year.

According to the college department sources, the decision was taken to accommodate maximum number of applicants.

A circular issued by the Punjab education secretary stated that the decision was made to expand opportunities of cheap higher education to maximum students.

Admission to intermediate classes for the next academic year would begin after summer vacation.

TORTURE: Three persons allegedly tortured a boy to death in Javed Colony on Friday night.

According to police, the families of Nazik Husain Panwar and Nazir had an enmity. Nazir along with his son Naeem and accomplice Munshi allegedly attacked Shahzaib, 15, son of Nazik.

Shahzaib suffered serious injuries and was shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital where he died.

Saddar police registered a case against the three suspects who managed to flee from the scene.

Police sent the body to the mortuary for postmortem and raided a number of places to arrest the accused, but to no avail.
