SHIKARPUR: The officer in charge of the Sindh Rangers at Shikarpur, Abdul Jabbar Abbasi, along with his colleague Mushtaque Ahmed, and a suspected criminal was killed in a fierce gun battle that also left a passer-by dead near Garhi Yasin on Tuesday evening. Another Rangers man, Asmat Hayat, was admitted to the Pannu Aqil Cantonment Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

According to sources privy to the encounter, DSR Abbasi died on the spot while Mr Ahmed succumbed to his wounds late in the evening after remaining under treatment for several hours at the cantonment hospital.

The gun battle took place during the ongoing operation against gangs of dacoits and other criminals operating in the forest area around Garhi Yasin.

The suspected criminal shot dead during the battle was later identified as Sha’aban Marfani and the deceased passer-by as Abdul Qadir Mahar.

The Rangers team arrested a wounded suspect, later identified as Gulsher Brohi, after the clash. He was admitted to the Shikarpur district headquarters hospital for treatment.

Arrangements were being made to dispatch the body of DSR Abbasi to his hometown, Bahawalpur, while the bodies of Sha’aban Mirani and Mr Mahar were taken to the Garhi Yasin Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
