THE issue of May 23 carried two letters to the editor that highlight the pathetic condition of roads and blocked sewerage drains in Karachi.
University Road is in a deplorable condition. This thoroughfare has undergone no repairs for ages. At many places traffic is forced to slow down to a snail’s pace because of the encroachments that hamper traffic flow.
The law prohibits the use of loudspeakers for anything except the Azan but this regulation is no longer implemented.
Garbage is supposed to be disposed of properly at designated locations; instead it is carelessly dumped everywhere. Why can’t the garbage be collected in an orderly manner and used to generate electricity by burning it in an incinerator?
The latest issue to strike the metropolis is an acute water shortage while tankers selling this precious commodity are seen plying all over the city. Why are the citizens forced to pay exorbitant rates for a basic necessity of life? Why is the city government not doing anything in the matter?
Has the city administration forgotten their duty is to provide water, electricity, a pollution-free and clean environment, cheap transportation system incorporating circular railways and good roads within the city, public toilets, and most of all ensure the safety and security of all citizens irrespective of caste or creed. Of these amenities, how many facilities has the public enjoyed in recent years?
