KARACHI: Helmet-wearing has been declared mandatory for motorcyclists, including pillion-riders, in the metropolis from June 1, the traffic police said on Tuesday.
Legal action would be taken against the motorcyclists who do not follow the order, according to DIG (Traffic) Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh. He said that the measure, which was taken by invoking relevant section of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, would also apply to pillion-riders, including women.

Two problems immediately come to mind because of this decision. First, no more identification of criminals involved in street crimes etc. by CCTV cameras as the faces of the individual(s) would be hidden from view. Second, there could be an increase in street crimes because, just as above, the person being robbed would not be able to see the robber's face(s) who would then steal and speed away with no fear of being caught in the sea of helmet wearing individuals.
