KARACHI: Jawed Shamim clinched the ‘Premier’ division title with 7 wins and a spread of 234 at the Danpak 10th Ranking Scrabble Tournament played at Beach Luxury hotel on Sunday.

Waseem Khatri made a poor start losing his first three matches before making a strong comeback to finish runner-up with 6 wins and a spread of 676. Former World Youth champion Moiz Baig stumbled at the last step to end up 3rd with 6 wins and a spread of 495.

In the “Master” division veteran Anwar Siddiqui tasted victory after a long gap. He won 7 matches and had a spread of 326. The 17-year-old Hamza Sheikh finished second with 6 wins & one tie and had a spread of 382. Fahim Naqvi stood third with 6 wins and a spread of 558

The “advance” category was won by the 13-year-old Taha Mirza with 8 wins and a spread of 892. Waseem Baig stood second with 7 wins and a spread of 165 while Danial Sanaullah was third with 6 wins and a spread of 460.

Danial’s brother Shoaib Sanaullah won the “recreational” category with 7 wins and a spread of 415. Shoaib was the only player that remained unbeaten in the tournament. Haseeb Ahmad was second with 6 wins and a spread of 698 while Hasan Ahmed remained third with 6 wins and a spread of 345.

The Novice category was won by Ahad Riaz with 6 wins and a spread of 1159 while Duha Saleem finished second with 6 wins and a spread of 428 and Ahmed Salik was third with 6 wins and a spread of 374.

In all, 82 players turned up for the event. The marketing head of Danpak Foods distributed the prizes to the winners.
