PESHAWAR: The local lawyers on Saturday continued boycott of courts for the second consecutive day against torturing of their colleague by police officials and decided to continue their protest till suspension of the concerned officials and registration of FIR against them.

A joint meeting of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council, Peshawar High Court Bar Association and Peshawar District Bar Association was held here which decided to continue boycott of courts in Peshawar on Monday (May 25).

While there was no court work in the high court on Saturday, the lawyers mostly stayed away from proceedings before other courts in the Judicial Complex.

The meeting was addressed by PHCBA president Fida Gul, its secretary general Mohammad Taif Khan, PDBA president Mohammad Ismail Khalil, its general secretary Mohammad Saeed Khan, KP Bar Council vice-chairman Ahmad Farooq Khattak and others.

The speakers said that four days ago a lawyer Faqirullah Awam had gone to Pakha Ghulam police post in connection with arrest of a person of his area.

They said that in the police post, he spotted the policemen severely torturing a young boy over which he tried to stop them. However, they said, the policemen also tortured him severely on the excuse that he had been interfering in their official duty.

The lawyer has been suffering from some injuries now including a fractured knee. The police officials alleged that he had torn shirt of a policeman and also some important papers. However, the lawyers refuted their allegations stating that he had suffered paralysis attack few months ago and he could not even walk properly let alone attacking someone.

The meeting decided to stage a protest demonstration on Monday and block the Khyber Road till the concerned police officials were suspended and FIR registered against them. It was decided to stage a sit-in near the Chief Minister’s House for the acceptance of their demands. PDBA secretary general Saeed Khan said that in their Monday’s meeting they would also be joined by the Pakistan Bar Council.
