IN budget year 2013-14, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) proposed withdrawals of some income tax exemptions, including reduction in tax rebate for full-time teachers, researchers, scholars and scientists from 40pc to 75pc to generate additional revenue for the country.
On the one hand, the government continues to stress on the significance of quality education and promoting research in the country, on the other it is deterring competent, committed and talented youths of the country.
The government decision to withdraw 75pc tax rebate has caused great concern among those associated with teaching in different institutions.
The budget 2015-16 is expected to be announced soon. I request the prime minister, the finance minister and the FBR chairman to look into the matter and reverse the decision.
