In Pictures: The crash at Naltar
A day of mourning was announced after seven were killed in a tragic crash at Naltar Valley.
A military helicopter with diplomat passengers crash-landed on a school in Gilgit Baltistan’s Naltar Valley, killing seven on board.
The deceased include ambassador of Norway Leif H. Larsen, Ambassador of Philippines Domingo D. Lucenario Jr, wives of Indonesian and Malaysian envoys Mrs Heri Listyawati Burhan Muhammad and Mrs Datin Habibah Mahmud; and three Pakistanis — Maj Faisal (pilot), Maj Altamash (pilot) and Subaidar Zakir (crew).
Preparations have also been made to send the bodies to their home countries.

Very important to highlight bravery of the pilots in this tragedy who flew the helicopter in a matter which made the nose dive first knowing fully well the impact would kill them but save the passengers in the back. They are heroes.

@Euro I hate to disappoint you but this is simply not possible in a helicopter: you see, unlike the aircrafts, helos don't have airfoils for flight control, and thus the entire flight is controlled by changing the angle of attack by the rotor blades. This has two consequences; 1) unlike an aircraft the helos will ONLY come down if a malfunction affects the rotors, while a plane may come down due to a variety of malfunctions in a variety of systems, 2) but this "immunity" from airfoil control related issues, has a flip side: if the rotors are out of control, the pilot loses ALL control over the remaining flight and the copter will crash totally out of control. Which part hits the earth will, of course, depend on the complicated interaction of dynamic forces along with gravity. So, from an aerodynamic point of view, pilot control of the manner and place where a copter crashes (unlike an aircraft) is extremely rare - could only happen if the engine is losing power relatively slowly - very rare but possible. In that case most pilots would try to steer the craft as far away as possible from people on the ground and keep the helo as STABLE as possible so that it would hit the earth with its belly where most of the impact force will be absorbed by the landing gear. Nose diving purposely makes absolutely no sense - for one thing, this is where all electrical cables come together and shorting live cables in a crash when a fuel leak might explode it is not what competent pilots would do. So nose diving purposely does not make sense at any level. Short summary: It is time to grieve not assign blame or create heroes with dubious speculations...until the final investigation report is out.
