LAHORE: A guard stationed at the United States consulate on Empress Road died in hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn that the guard identified as Anjum Shah of Khushab was on duty in a cabin outside the consulate when he accidentally shot himself and died on the way to Ganga Ram Hospital.

The DIG said that it could not be ruled out that he might committed suicide over some unknown issue.

He said investigations were underway to probe the incident.
