DOCTORS are considered ‘messiahs’. Sadly enough, they have forgotten their sacred duty of serving humanity. It is regrettable that this profession has been transformed into a business of profit maximisation.

The country has been engulfed by this growing menace. Parachinar, Kurram Agency, has a population of about 600,000 people, but is deprived of health facilities etc. The condition of the lone government hospital is pathetic. Doctors are seldom available. This hospital is known as a ghost house. The saddest tale is of the gynaecology department.

The health of expectant mothers is vulnerable. The few gynaecologists who are available play tricks on the gullible and illiterate people. They are coerced into going for operation instead of a normal delivery. This is so because the doctors charge double or triple the amount for the operation as compared to normal delivery. The operation is done often before the completion of the normal 38 weeks.

Hence, babies are born premature. In this way, these doctors put the lives of both the mother and the baby at risk. The authorities concerned should take appropriate measures to stop this unethical practice.
