LAHORE: A card of eight races featuring the Spring Cup has been dished out for the connoisseurs of equine sports during the 33rd Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

A term race for three-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies to be contested over the middle distance of 1,400 metres, the Spring Cup has a tiny field of six runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.

Three important races, including the Lahore Classic Cup, scheduled for Sunday has been declared void for paucity of runners. That is clearly indicative of poor response by horse-owners to run their horses in events meant for upper classes in view of the hot summer weather.

But still there remains some charm with the Spring Cup and two races to be contested by class six horses over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres. They add some colour to the eight-event card.

The other five races belong to class seven runners with all to be run over 900 metres.

In all, 81 horses will line up in eight races at the starting gates before the starter raises the white flag. The first race will be held at 1.00pm.
