ANI chief Tariq Mehboob dies in custody

KARACHI: Anjuman Naujwanan-i-Islam (ANI) chief and member of Sunni Ittehad Council Tariq Mehboob died in custody on Saturday, however, it is not clear whether his death took place in Central Jail Karachi or Rangers' custody.
While officials initially asserted that Mehboob died of a heart attack, his family suspects foul play and alleges that he was tortured.
Last week, Mehboob and seven others were picked up by paramilitary force personnel near Yousuf Plaza in Block 16 of Federal B area, and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
The ANI chief was accused of providing refuge to target killers which is punishable under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
Two days earlier, Mehboob was produced in an anti-terrorism court (ATC) which remanded him in Rangers' custody for 90 days under the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO).
However, a press release issued by the Rangers said the accused was sent for 90 days Preventive Detention by ATC in Central Jail on April 16 after completing all legal formalities for further investigation.
The press release added that he did not die in Rangers' custody and that he died in Central Jail Karachi.
After completion of legal formalities, his body was shifted to a hospital where a post mortem was conducted. The cause of his death was kept reserved.
MQM demands formation of judicial commission to probe Mehboob's death
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Nadeem Nusrat demanded the formation of a judicial commission to probe the death of ANI chief Tariq Mehboob.
The MQM leader said Mehbood was a citizen of Karachi and his death had grieved each and every worker of the MQM as well as the people of Karachi.

@Pakistan He was accused and expired due to heart attack, ranger is nothing to do with natural death. don't blame everything on Rangers blindly they are our saviour and know how to perform their duty very best.

Rangers have the right to pick up the suspect and interrogative them as long the interrogation procedure is not too punitive and takes into consideration physical health and age of the accused.

NO Sir, Move on (Its a natural death) Rangers you are doing a good job. The message should be loud & clear, its high time we decide what we want, do we want safe & secure Pakistan or we want few hardliners calling the shot? they all will appear innocent & their families will contact every NGO on earth despite the fact that how many got killed by people who they protected & provided shelter to. Move on we need many more like this.

In independent inquiry should be initiated in the matter and all culprits involved in this death should be taken to task especially the doctor who has given the health certificate of the accused to the court as nobody is allowed LEA custody until and unless official doctor give a certificate of fitness for the same if the certificate was not obtained by the Rangers then all responsible for this custodial murder should also be taken to the task

@Pakistan..heart attacks occur either due to torture or due to stress. 2) Muhammad Ahsan Siddiqui...Rangers has the right to pick up when there is solid evidence...but they have no right killed the person in custody

Who is policing the police or ranging the rangers? Don't blame the rangers or the Police (some say), but who is actually upholding the law? Police and Rangers? How does one come to know the truth? Who will be prosecuted for murdering the one that was in the custody of rangers/Police?

Tariq mehbob was a thorough Gentleman today Karachi lost one of its best son who practically worked for shia sunni unity he is outspoken critics of Taliban SSP LJ and other banned organizations unfortunately his killing in rangers custody gives this speculation further confirms that this operation is biased and controversial also there is no action taken place against banned secetariian outfits which seems enjoying official patronage

No one should die in custody of the law enforcing agencies otherwise it will create doubts about foul play and he may have been tortured to death , who knows !. In this country you can't trust any one .The agencies got the right to pick up the suspect and interrogate but not the right to kill !

Reading the blind support for Rangers in the comment section is appalling. Even before an inquiry, people are willing to give clean chit to Rangers. Any other part of the world, this would have raised serious questions. Not in Pakistan.

It was an unfortunste incident and forces must take care of it but don't create fuss on it. Government should arrange trainings for advanced techniques of investigation so investigators may to need to use torture as a tool.

Any death under police custody must be thoroughly investigated to ascertain if the death was natural or result of torture.
While no criminal, especially terror related, target killers and ransom extractors, should not be spared at all and rangers, police and other government agencies have a commendable performance in the regard, abuse of power resulting in loss of human life should also be punished with full force of law.
Crime must be stopped not by another crime but by law alone.

The extra judicial killing needs to stop. ATC was set up to address hard core terrorists who are mass murderers (ie Talibans, Sipah-e Sahaba and the likes). They have yet to try anyone like that. This death could and should have been avoided.

Sir, I complained before that the judges gave him illegal 90 days prison and that was wrong. Now he is dead of heart attack. It looks like the judges sent him to illegal jail to be killed actually.

The very fruits of Our version of American Patriot Act is coming up. The American made Patriot Act to punish foreigners and we made Pakistan Protection Ordinance to kill our very own people. This is just the begginnig. Innocenr until proven guilty. Man was killed in Rangers custody without any conviction and sentencing. What are you protecting Pakistan at the cost of its very own citizens. The atrocities committed by law enforcing agrncies are known to everyone. The person killed in Karachi who died infront of Rangers while begging them to help him is one of the worst example of brutality.

@Muhammad Ahsan Siddiqui - How can you be so sure that Rangers have nothing to do with his death. In Pakistan anyone picked by police or rangers for interrogation is doomed. Almost all accused chooses the less painful option which is confession which they sign gladly.

Nothing wrong with an honest investigation and a candid post mortem , it will clear every one of any wrong doings. Family of Tariq Mehboob has every right to ask for an investigation to find out the facts. Just think for a moment if that was your brother or father.

So sad to see comments. I do not know him or have any background, however Pakistani citizens have ready tried him thru media and consider his death by law enforcement as irrelevant. Is there a due process or someone is simply picked up by lawenforcement, possibly framed and promoted by media and killed during imrisionment. We did same in Bangladesh and what were the result ?

very interesting comments... do we have a legal postmortem procedures. if some one dies suspiciously. why are we so eager on speculations... there are just options and no facts...let us get our facts first, then you can ask our agencies to distort them as they please.

He was a peaceful person working for unity of Pakistanis and may the work he initiated be complete as full peace and harmony in Karachi and all Pakistan as the country came into being for bringing peace the agenda of non friendly countries to have pakistanis fight with each other is not tolerable.
