RAWALPINDI: A baby boy was stolen from the gynaecology ward of the Military Hospital (MH) on Friday, police said.
Shahzad Ahmed, a resident of Dhoke Hassu, who works in a bakery as an accountant, took his wife to the hospital on Thursday. The woman delivered her third son at 7:30am.
In his statement with R.A. Bazaar police, Shahzad said since his wife was admitted to the gynecology ward, a woman started visiting her. A few moments before his son disappeared, the baby had been handed over to the mother by her sister-in-law.
The incident came to light after the grandfather of the newborn visited the hospital and wanted to see the baby. As one of the baby’s aunts went to the patient’s ward, she found the baby missing.
The family suspected that the woman, who had been visiting the mother of the newborn and was spotted roaming in the gynaecology ward, might have stolen the baby.
Inspector Mohammad Riaz of the R.A. Bazaar police station, who is leading the investigation, told Dawn that the baby was stolen at around 2:45pm. He said an unidentified woman visited the baby’s mother and mixed up with the family.
The police will try to get the CCTV footage to trace the suspect.
