KARACHI: The recently-organised Green Karachi Sports Festival for the deaf children concluded here on Wednesday with Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui distributing the prizes among the outstanding participants at the Park for Special People.
The students from Army Public School — Faisal, Shiraz Asif and Saad Asif — delivered speeches on Green Karachi and also presented a tableau.
In the festival cricket match Hassan XI beat Babar XI by four wickets. In the throwball event Wariha Dolphins defeated Kiran Panthers. The deaf children also demonstrated taekwondo skills. Later, shields and prizes were given away by the chief guest.
The commissioner said that deaf children are an important part of the society who are bestowed with tremendous talents and capabilities and organising this festival for them by District Municipal Corporation South is a novel step which should be followed by others.
Shoaib said besides providing opportunities for recreation and healthy activities to deaf children, the purpose of organising this festival is to convey Green Karachi message to all segments of the society.
Administrator South Mir Farooq Langove, Municipal Commissioner Mohammed Raisi, Chairman Noor Ali Trust, Mrs Laila Dossa, Director Sports Asif Azeem and District Health Officer South Mohammed Nasir were also present on the occasion.
The Administrator South appreciated the deaf children participating in the sports events and said that these children had raised the country’s national standard in the Special Olympics. In the absence of appropriate facilities, their sterling performance at the international level showed that they could perform even better if they were provided with better facilities.
He acknowledged the efforts on the part of Mrs Laila Dossa, the heart and soul of the JS Academy for Deaf.
