LARKANA: A ceremony marking the 18th death anniversary of eminent Sindhi writer and researcher Dr Mohabbat Burirro was organised by the Arts Council of Pakistan, Larkana, in collaboration with the Dr Mohabbat Burirro Academy, Qamber.

Known Sindhi broadcaster and poet Mukhtiar Malik presided over the programme, where writers Dr Badar Ujjan, Prof Mukhtiar Sammo and Hussain Bukhsh Narejo were the guests of honour.

Dr Burirro’s newly-published book Fitrat, science aeen samaaj (Nature, science and society) was also launched on the occasion.

Mukhtiar Malik described Dr Burirro as a “genius” who in his small life of just 40 years contributed profusely to the nation in political and social sectors, besides literature. He was a proactive political and social worker who fought for the rights of the poor and downtrodden in Sindh. Being a prolific writer who wrote many books and 28 of them had already been published and the remaining ones are worth publishing. The subjects of his books range from science and philosophy to society, politics language and other serious issues.

Dr Badar stressed the need for a review of each of Dr Burirro’s books for which workshops should be held to discuss them. He said the new generation should, thus, be given opportunities to explore the treasure.

Prof Mukhtiar Sammo said Dr Burirro was among the men who brought about a positive change within themselves and in society. He used his pen to influence the masses in his struggle to educate the common man for the betterment of society. He said the scholar wrote continuously and extensively, gave lectures to people in towns and villages of the province to create awareness of people’s rights. Dr Burirro believed in his and other people’s total participation in the uplift of society, said Prof Sammo.

Hussain Bukhsh Narejo, a political figure, said Dr Burirro was a national hero who devoted his life to public service.

Poet Sarmad Chandio said Dr Burirro was a well-read scholar who contributed a lot in the field of language as well.

Others who spoke included Dr Prih Sakina Gaad, Dr Ahsan Danish, Dr Fayyaz Latif, Bhao Dur Mohammed Burirro, Mashaal Burirro, Dr Zulifkar Rahujo, Engineer Javed Ahmed Shaikh, Prof Jehangir Abbasi, Rizwan Gul, Prof Manzoor Chajiro and Hadi Bukhsh.

Abdul Wahab Sahito, Prof Mukhtiar Ahmed Sammo and Rizwan Gul were given ‘Dr Mohabbat Burirro Award’ in recognition of their outstanding services in the field of literature and education.
