BoP posts profit at Rs4.3bn in 2014

LAHORE: Bank of Punjab (BoP) on Friday registered a profit-before-tax at Rs4.3 billion for the year 2014 as compared to Rs3bn the previous year, an increase of 43 per cent. The earnings per share (eps) remained at Rs1.94.

The bank’s total assets stood at Rs420bn in 2014 against Rs353bn in the previous year. The net interest margin also improved to Rs9bn as against Rs4bn in 2013, reflecting 125pc growth.—Staff Reporter

Workshop on Islamic banking in Africa

KARACHI: Meezan Bank, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Djibouti and Islamic Development Bank’s (IBD) research wing, has recently conducted a workshop on transparency, disclosures and governance in Islamic banking in Africa, said a press release.

The programme was aimed at building Islamic banking capacity within the industry and was attended by participants from both the Islamic and conventional banking industries.

Apple’s Tim Cook ‘will give away all his money’

CUPERTINO (California): Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook is joining the roster of the very rich who are giving away their wealth.

Fortune magazine cited the head of the world’s largest technology corporation as saying he planned to donate his estimated $785 million fortune to charity — after paying for his 10-year-old nephew’s college education.

“You want to be the pebble in the pond that creates the ripples for change,” Cook told the magazine.

Fortune estimated Cook’s net worth, based on his holdings of Apple stock, at about $120m.—Reuters

BlackBerry ekes out profit as revenues plunge

MONTREAL: Canada’s BlackBerry said Friday it posted a modest profit in the past quarter, beating expectations despite a continued slide in its revenues.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company posted earnings of $28 million in the quarter ending February 28, compared to a $423m loss a year earlier.

Its fourth quarter revenues, meanwhile, were $660m — down 32 per cent from a year earlier and 16pc from the prior quarter.
