JHANG: Eight inmates were executed in different jails in Punjab on Tuesday.

In Jhang’s District Jail, three convicts were sent to gallows in the early hours of Tuesday. Two more are scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday.

Those hanged till death were Muhammad Sharif, Mubashir Abbas (both belonged to Chiniot) and Muhammad Riaz (Toba Tek Singh).

Abbas and Sharif were accused of renting a car in Lalian in 1998 and later they drove away with it after killing driver Nawaz. They were awarded death sentence by the judge of ATC Faisalabad. Riaz was handed down death penalty by the Toba Tek Singh district & sessions judge after he was found guilty.

The subsequent appeals by the convicts to the higher courts and the mercy petition to the president of Pakistan were dismissed following which their black warrants were issued. They had their last meeting with their relatives on Monday. Their bodies were handed over to their families.

Ghulam Muhammad and Zakir Hussain, both belonging to Chiniot, are being hanged on Wednesday. Ghulam Muhammad had murdered his brother-in-law Inam Mustafa over a petty dispute while Hussain killed Zulfiqar Jandran of Chiniot with whom he had a dispute over being mutawalli of an Imambargah.

MIANWALI: Two death-row prisoners of Sargodha district were hanged in Central Jail.

Rabnawaz of Bhalwal tehsil killed a relative over a petty dispute in 2000 and was sentenced to death by the sessions court of Sargodha.

Zafar Iqbal killed a women in 2003 and the ATC of Sargodha awarded him death sentence.

Jail Superintendent Mirza Sajid Beg told Dawn that the mercy petition of Ahmed Nawaz, a murder convict, had been turned down by the president. His black warrant was issued by the Mianwali district and sessions judge and he would be hanged on Wednesday morning.

The security of Central Jail had been heightened, he said. He said the black warrants of seven convicts were awaited.

GUJRANWALA: A condemned prisoner of Central Jail was executed.

Muhammad Iqbal had killed his uncle Muhammad Sharif over some dispute in Hafizabad in 1996. The sessions court handed down death sentence.

Jail Superintendent Kamran Anjum said it was the first execution in Central Jail after seven years.

MULTAN: A prisoner involved in raping and murdering a girl was hanged in New Central Jail on Tuesday.

Zafar Iqbal, a resident of Gelaywal, Lodhran district was hanged after the Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 issued his death warrant a couple of days back. He was awarded death for raping and killing a minor girl in Lodhran in 1996.

The execution of convict Waqar Nazeer was stopped after his family reached an agreement with heirs of Malik Rafique, who was killed on resistance during a house robbery on April 24, 1996.

FAISALABAD: A murder convict was hanged in Central Jail on Tuesday.

Nawaz of Tandlianwala had gunned down his neighbour in 1992 over a water drainage issue.
