KARACHI: Several religious parties on Friday staged a sit-in at the Numaish traffic intersection against the Islamabad High Court decision to uphold the death sentence of Mumtaz Qadri in the then Punjab Governor Salman Taseer murder case.

The protesters demanded that the conviction of the self-confessed killer be reviewed.

The sit-in organised by Tanzeemat-e-Ahle Sunnat — an alliance of several parties representing the Barelvi school of thought — caused police to close M.A. Jinnah Road and connecting roads for security that led to traffic congestion on every other artery leading to Karachi district south. The situation turned normal when traffic officials diverted the traffic to alternative routes.
