In the wake of the Army Public School carnage in Peshawar, authorities have been strictly checking travel documents of commuters at the border.

However, locals say routine travel has gone down after the tragic attack on APS in December last year which left more than a hundred students and faculty dead.

Khyber is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous regions governed by tribal laws and lies near the Afghan border.

Authorities had launched the ongoing operation 'Khyber-1' in the region in October 2014 on credible information about the presence of militants in parts of Sipah and Akkakhel areas.

Khyber-1 was launched amidst 'Zarb-i-Azb', a full-fledged military operation being conducted by the Pakistani military against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in North Waziristan tribal region.
