Afridi joins 8,000 one-day run club

NAPIER: Swashbuckling Pakistani allrounder Shahid Afridi joined the 8,000 one-day run club during his 21 not out against the United Arab Emirates in the World Cup at Napier on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old became the fourth Pakistani after Inzamam-ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Saeed Anwar to make 8,000 one-day runs and the 27th of all time.
Afridi, who also took 2-35 in the 129-run win, needs five more wickets to complete 400 one-day wickets.
If he takes those five wickets, he will become the only allrounder to score more than 8,000 runs and take 400 wickets.

COngratulations Lala. Impressed with the fact that you played for a long time for Pakistan wihout any stigma of match fixing. We need moderate but clean heroes and you are one of them! THis is important for us as a nation, as some of our greats suffers from having being critially involved in m. fixing! Bravo for being steadfast!

His stats are amazing. Among the elite group he has highest strike rate, lowest average, highest number of wickets, most half centuries in 22 balls most centuries in 75 balls, highest number of sixes. Helped Pakistan to its only triangular victory in Australia, won the Asia Cup. Most of more records than I could recall. His entertainment value is of course non quantifiable.

What is not pointed out is that Afridi's average is the lowest by a wide margin from all the greats who make this list. Afridi has 8000 aggregate runs only because he has played so many matches, and against so many weak teams. He is a below average batsman who has credentials to prove that claim - no significant match winning innings!

congrats Afridi. You have given a lot to the Pakistani Cricket. As an allrounder is not easy to play day in and day out with both ball and bat. A lot of people criticize you for being reckless and for the most part, it is true but they do not realize that you are bowling allrounder and your numbers speaks for themselves. You have 2nd highest 5 wickets hauls in Pakistan cricket behind Waqar (ODI), you bowling average is between 25-35 which is excellent for spinner, and even at an age of 35+ you are one the most fittest and above all, given what Pakistan cricket has gone through from, leg pulling, PCB chairman fiasco, match fixing, captaincy issue, you have maintained your popularity, charisma, character and your star power. Great job Lala. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

@Ahmed Sir FYI, Afridi is not a traditional leg spinner like Shane Warne or Abdul Qadir who turn the ball miles after pitching. He was more like a Kumble type bowler who hardly spun the ball. Since Kumble was taller, he took his wickets with bounce and little pace where as Afridi took his wickets with flight and penetrating the ball through bat and pad game or inducing inside edges when batsman tried to cut him off the back foot as his balls usually do not spin.

Only in Pakistan can someone like Afridi have a career spanning 2 decades. Just look at his averages against the Top 7 countries.
Batting: M 327, Average 22.63.
Bowling: M 327, Wickets 296, Average 38.22.
The statistics clearly indicate that neither is he a bowler, nor a batsmen.

considering he played around 400 odi's...that means while bowling he takes less than 1 wicket per match and scores 20 runs per match .such a mediocore performer... I think kallis razzaq Jayasuriya are real ones
