FOR the last three months work for improvement at Jamshoro bypass has been in progress by the National Highway Authority. The diversion is on rocky soil, both sides; for Karachi and upcountry-bound traffic.
On an average, 100,000 vehicles of all types use it daily. The diversion is barren rocks popping out, tearing tyres and taking vehicles at least 15 minutes to cross.
Calculating motor user costs of fuel, engine, gear and tyre loss, the lost amount per vehicle, including long trailers, comes to Rs1,000. This means a loss of Rs10m a day.
This can be saved if a layer of shingle/pit-run gravel available nearby is laid and water sprinkled. The NHA should pay attention to this issue.
