PESHAWAR: Health experts at a research conference here on Saturday urged doctors to carry out research on local diseases to benefit people.

They also stressed the need for training to doctors on how to translate local research into practice and improve patient’s care.

The conference titled “Translating Research into Practice” was organised by Khyber Medical University. It was aimed at speeding up quality research on the prevalent illnesses and medical issues to put in place highly trained medics and improve healthcare.

The speakers included Professor Riaz Anwar Khan, Professor Abdul Basit, Dr Uzma Rahim Khan, Dr Asad Mian, Dr Nukhba Zia, Dr Jawad Ahmad, Dr Ziaul Haq, Dr Mohammad Naseem, Dr Tasleem Akhtar, Dr Mohammad Marwat and Dr Rashid Hafeez Nasir.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar was the chief guest on the occasion. He said that research and innovative approaches to solution of problems had proved instrumental in the past and added that the countries which excelled in the two areas always emerged successful.

The basic function of a university was to carry out research and open door of knowledge to students, he said, asking the universities to generate knowledge through research and innovation to address the local issues.

KMU being the only public sector medical university in the province should respond to people’s expectations regarding assisting the government, public, policymakers, managers and patients regarding health issues. The solutions found through local research will empower us to overcome the obstacles to healthcare delivery and capacity building, explained Mr Qaiser.

“Locally-conducted researches pay off as these help the people and ultimately lead to improvement in healthcare delivery,” he maintained.

KMU vice chancellor Professor Mohammad Hafizullah said that the institutes affiliated with the varsity had been providing a wide range of courses to undergraduates to postgraduates.
