Shabnam, Ghalia set up final clash at Masters TT

KARACHI: The All-Pakistan Masters Cup table tennis tournament has reached the final stage on the penultimate day at the Majeed Khan’s Gymnasium of Islamia Club on Monday.

Top ranked Shabnam Bilal set-up a final date with recently national championship’s losing finalist and department mate Ghalia Mohsin after the two won their women’s singles semi-finals in contrasting styles. While Shabnam blanked local player and 16th seed Abeera Ali straight 11-5, 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 Ghalia was stretched to limits by fourth ranked Ayesha Iqbal before conquering the battle 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-8.

Ghalia had beaten Shabnam when the two last clashed in the quarters of the national event at Bahawalpur.

Outsiders Salman Virk and Abdul Rahim made it to the men’s singles final registering contrasting semi-final victories. Trailing at the bottom ranking (32nd) Salman fought back to overcome fourth ranked Shujat Ali 5-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9 while Rahim thumped Fahim Raza 11-5, 14-16, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6. This is Rahim’s maiden final of the Masters Cup.

Both the men’s and women’s singles finals will be played on Tuesday evening.
