Greece's new government pledged to close down detention centres for illegal immigrants that have long been criticised by rights groups as inhumane. A 28-year-old Pakistani man had died overnight at the Amygdaleza detention centre in western Athens in a suspected suicide.
The United Nations has accused Greece of holding migrants in shocking conditions without heating or hot water.
Around 50 demonstrators held a protest during the minister’s visit, calling for all the centres to be closed and holding up a banner reading “shut down the concentration camps”. Inmates on the other side of the wire fence surrounding the camp held up placards in English reading “Freedom. We die here”.

The illegal migrants chose this path but it's sad to see such suffering...these people leave their country to find a better future because they can't see any future in their own country...it's a pipe dream to hope that our governments would ever work towards a better Pakistan where ordinary people can see a prosperous future but can they at least control illegal human trafficking and bring these poor people back home?

This is not the first time such an incident is reported. Is there any Pakistani TV anchor or TV channel to compile a documentary on the miseries of these people and inform the nation about the facts.
Where is our foreign office and where is our foreign minister to comment?

It is really shame that Pakistanis, Indians and Bangalis are trying to go to Greece which is sick man of Europe. It is failure of leaders of these countries and freedom experiments has failed. Had English ruled sub-continent for another 50 years the Greeks would be coming to India for jobs. What a shame..

Can a person entering another country without proper authentication be called an immigrant, illegal or not? @fatima How do you align such acts with humanity or human rights? Irrespective of financial or humane reasons, a criminal act is a criminal act by any other name. The government of every nation has a duty to protect its citizens from criminals. Let the law of the lad take its due course.

Send the uninvited "guests" back to where they came from. You cannot force yourself on those who don't even know you and demand to be tyreated royally.

These illegal migrants have left their home country like Pakistan to find a good life in other countries. The leaders in Pakistan should do something at home so that these migrants stay home and live a good life.

@SP Detention centres for "illegal immigrants" should be short term only, whilst their applications for asylum are assessed. They should then be either granted residence, or promptly deported, whichever is applicable.

No sympathies with illegal immigrants, and Pakistan should also adopt such measures for Afghans, Biharis, Iranians and other illegal immigrants, who are living in unauthorizedly in millions in Karachi. Those who cross the international boundaries for any reason whatsoever are traitors and should be dealt with iron-hand.

@Malik Javed He is busy telling BBC that there are good Taliban and bad Taliban. He is busy blaming India for terrorism in the country. There never really a concern for the people who get caught in the midst. Is is too much expense or legal wrangles to free these people and bring them back home?

It is simple, Pakistani ambassador should meet with these people and tell them conditions for repayment of expense of repatriation in cash or in kind upon their return. There are always glitches in recovering but national pride demands taking the trouble. I recall President Jimmy Carter and President Bill Clinton going to North Korea requesting and getting release of American citizens.

Those who chose fence and pay huge prices for that, can only be given what they bought. Their return at huge cost by their motherland they betrayed is salt on their nation's injuries. The amount of money they give to human traffickers and the cost of their repatriation combined would make enough for them to invest even in Government savings and earn comfortable amount to live without work, back home, if they so desire. But, who can buy the common sense ?

@Whatisinname What you said may sound true but seeking a better life for oneself is neither a sin nor a betrayal of ones homeland. The bad seeds are the human traffickers that lure their victims in their webs.

But can you blame the Europeans for taking measures against illegal immigration? Just look at Paris and London. Many immigrant areas are so lawless and pathetic, even local Europeans are not safe there.
Will these immigrants behave well after settling in Europe. There is rampant Jihad-ism , lawlessness and religious intolerance from these so-called victims from poor nations. Also it is estimated that 80% of refugees world over are Muslims. Can they not find refuge in Saudi Arabia and UAE and Brunei? These are also rich countries. Why don't hey allow any political refugees?

No nation or society will allow in modern times to enter illegally, whereas potential threat has arisen dramatically.
They should remain at home instead of using human traffickers well paid and organized, or apply legally or must enter to islamic nearest states!
Anyone who support should first admit few people to their own homes and face the reality or consequence!

There is a saying, when someone comes to your house be kind and hospitable, he or she brings blessings with them. When they leave they take your sins and shortcomings.
Greeks over the past few decades have forgotten this. Once a hospitable nation that gave the world democracy, it is now a failed state. The are in debt up to their heads and beyond. Their institutions are in shambles, the people despondent. The blessings are gone, sins remain.

80% of illegals are Muslim? Where did you hear this nonsense? USA has 11 million illegals, overwhelmingly Latino Christians. Europe has huge numbers of African migrants too from Christians countries. Even a huge percentage of Indians in NYC and Toronto are illegals.
Second, you really suggested BRUNEI take in migrants? A tiny country on an island in the middle of the South Pacific? Really?
Thirdly, you think muslims don't go to muslim countries? Pakistan has literally millions of afghans, burmese, bengalis. Iran has ions of afghans.
Really, your comment is just another reflection of attitude in India. Anything that casts muslims in a bad light is immediately accepted without even a shred of doubt. So much for India's tradition of learning!
