HYDERABAD: Higher Educa­tion Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed has said it is a golden era of the country that 163 universities are imparting higher education in the public and private sectors. The number is still increasing, he said.

Addressing the inaugural session of the fourth international multi topic conference organised by the Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET) on Wednesday, he said the country was facing a crisis that was the result of wrong policies framed by the people of his generation.

He expressed the hope that all crises right from terrorism to water and energy would be resolved by youth.

He said the HEC would launch a programme to provide the facility of Wi-fi in all universities to provide students easy access to the internet. Researchers, educationists and experts of different fields from over 20 countries had shared their views and experiences to enlighten students and audience, he said. It would certainly help improve development of information and communication technology while telecommunication industry would get a boost as well, he added.

He said the MUET should take pride that all proceedings of this conference would be published in Springer, famous German publication of science and technology. He said different projects would be designed in the light of proposals and recommendations of experts to help ensure technological and economic development of society.

Addressing the conference, MUET vice chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Aslam Uqaili said research papers presented by national and international experts would be greatly helpful for meeting present day needs and to respond to future challenges.

Especially, he said, it would be highly beneficial in the fields of computer science, software engineering, electronics engineering, telecommunication and energy management. He remarked that students and teachers would derive maximum benefit from this research environment, knowledge and interaction.

He said sessions of this conference were also being held in Khairpur campus where papers would also be presented by researchers.

Dr B.S. Chowdhry in his address of welcome emphasised the need for understanding information and communication technologies to meet challenges of population and global economy. He disclosed that 23 experts and 86 writers would present technical papers.

Technical committee chairman Dr Faisal Karim Sheikh said the poster session, PhD symposium, presentations and technical session were part of the conference which provided best opportunity to deliberate on social progress along with academia, researchers and people associated with industrial and trade sectors. He said it would yield positive results.

Earlier, the HEC chairman inaugurated the Mehran University Teachers and Students Center.
