KARACHI: Police on Wednesday claimed to have killed five suspected militants of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan in an alleged encounter on the outskirts of Malir, according to officials.

Acting on information about the presence of TTP militants in Nawab Town, police reached the area where they came under attack and in an ensuing exchange of fire, five suspects were gunned down, said Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

The police claimed to have seized a map of the Razzakabad police training centre from their possession and believed that the suspects were planning to attack it.

Nawab Town was recently established as a ‘nexus’ between the militants and Sohail Dada-led Malir gangsters, said SSP Anwar. He added that they occupied poultry farmlands where compounds were later constructed.

He said the identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately but they had reason to believe that they belonged to the TTP.

Shah Latif Town SHO Ali Hassan Shaikh said the police seized two suicide jackets, SMGs, one repeater, two TT pistols and explosive material apart from the recovery of the police training centre map from their custody.

The officer said they had reports that two of the deceased belonged to the Mehsud tribe while three others hailed from Swat.

‘Foreign spy’ held

The Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a foreign spy.

“The Rangers have conducted a surgical action in Faqeera Goth during which one foreign spy has been arrested,” said a Rangers spokesperson.
