KINGSTON: The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on Saturday announced that all-rounder Jason Holder has been appointed as One-day International captain.

Holder, 23, takes over from Dwayne Bravo.

A WICB release said that the recommendation for transition of the captaincy role was made by the Clive Lloyd-chaired selection panel and was approved by the Board of Directors.

Lloyd said that Holder’s appointment was with an eye to the future.

“Jason is one of the good, young players who we believe will form part of the long-term future of West Indies cricket. We expect him to be around for a very long time. He is a young man with a very bright future. We have invested in him. He was part of the High Performance Centre and he also played for the West Indies U-19 team and the West Indies ‘A’ team,” Lloyd said.

Holder has appeared in 21 ODIs and has taken 29 wickets. He previously served as vice-captain of West Indies ‘A’. Holder has also appeared in one Test and a T20 International.

His first assignment will be the West Indies five-match series in South Africa which follows the Test and T20 series.

The WICB thanked Bravo for his service to West Indies cricket in the capacity of the ODI captain after taking over from Darren Sammy a year ago.

Deonarine added to WI Test squad

PRETORIA: Left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine has been added to the West Indies Test squad for the final two matches in South Africa, the country’s cricket board has announced.

Deonarine comes in for Assad Fudadin, who fractured a finger in the warm-ups ahead of the first Test in Pretoria that ended in an innings and 220-run defeat for the tourists on Saturday.

Deonarine, 31, also a right-arm off-spin bowler, has played 18 Tests, the last of which in New Zealand a year ago.

The second Test starts in Port Elizabeth on Friday, with the final game to be played in Cape Town from Jan 2.--Reuters
