New Zealand beat Pakistan for series win

ABU DHABI: Skipper Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor hit half-centuries while paceman Matt Henry recorded career best bowling figures as New Zealand thumped Pakistan by 68 runs in the fifth and final one-dayer in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
Williamson's 97 and Taylor's 88 were the cornerstone of New Zealand's 275-4 before Henry's 5-30 helped dismiss Pakistan for 207 in 43.3 overs for a 3-2 series win at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
Pakistan won the first match in Dubai by three wickets and the third in Sharjah by 147 runs while New Zealand took the second by four wickets and the fourth game by seven runs.
Henry took the first three of the four wickets as Pakistan were struggling at 38-3 before Haris Sohail (65) and Ahmed Shehzad (54) put on 69 for the fourth wicket.
Henry then returned for his second spell to dismiss Shehzad followed by Sarfraz Ahmed (26) and Shahid Afridi (13) to improve on his previous best of 4-38 on debut against India at Wellington in January this year.
This becomes Pakistan's 12th defeat in the final games of a series after they were tied at 1-1 or 2-2. Their only win came against Zimbabwe in 2012.
Defeat left Pakistan without a one-day series win in 2014 after losing in Sri Lanka 2-1 and to Australia 3-0.
Pakistan were off to a disastrous start when opener Nasir Jamshed was leg-before wicket in the first over to Henry for nought.
Henry then had Younis Khan (12) and Shehzad (54) to leave Pakistan struggling at 107-4. In between, Anton Devcich had Asad Shafiq (seven) and Nathan McCullum dismissed Umar Akmal for six.
Sohail hit five fours and a six off 74 balls while Shehzad's knock of 81 balls had only two boundaries.
Shehzad was caught while Sohail was bowled by Mitchell McClenaghan, ending Pakistan's hopes of a win.
Earlier Williamson and Taylor propelled New Zealand to 275-4 in their 50 overs.
Williamson added an invaluable 116 for the third wicket with Taylor before top-edging a sweep off leg-spinner Afridi and was caught behind.
He hit eight boundaries off 119 balls, following up his 123 in the series-levelling win on Wednesday, also in Abu Dhabi.
Taylor hit five boundaries and a six off 95 balls, giving impetus in the last 15 overs in which 120 runs were scored. Tom Latham chipped in with an 18-ball 22 with four boundaries and Luke Ronchi made 16.
Williamson also added 66 for the second wicket with Dean Brownlie (34) after New Zealand lost opener Martin Guptill for eight to paceman Mohammad Irfan who finished with 2-62. Afridi finished with 1-33 in his ten overs.
Pakistan were forced to leave out opener Mohammad Hafeez who had a recurrence of a hamstring injury while struggling paceman Sohail Tanvir was dropped, making way for Shafiq and Zulfiqar Babar.
New Zealand brought in McCullum and Devcich for Daniel Vettori and Corey Anderson. Vettori left for home to attend his brother's wedding.
The one-day series marked the end of Pakistan's two-and-a-half month activity in United Arab Emirates in which they lost the one-day series to Australia 3-0 but beat them in the Test series 2-0.

Here we go again. I guess they don't care about what the Pakistani nation has said about postponing the matches.
Why are we in such a bad shape as a nation. While most of the nation mourns the loss of our children, our cricket team is at it again.
When someone dies, we mourn, not play a game to show the terrorist that we are not afraid. What a sick mentality the cricket team has.

When you have bowler like Anwar Ali or others who are not learning from their mistakes every team can set big target against you. Moreover,Younis Khan can be handy in test matches not in ODIs,although he scored a hundred in last match in six years but he is not consistent player particularly in ODIs.What Nasir Jamshaid and Asad Shafeeq have done,nothing again, media and people say PCB doesn't give chances to the deserving players but the fact is that we do not have quality stuff to compete at the international level.These players like Wahab Riaz,Anwar Ali,Bilawal Bhatti, Mohammad Irfan,Umer Gul,M. Hafeez,Nasir Jamshaid,Talha,Asad Shafeeq,Fawad Alam,Sharjeel ,Sohaib Maqsood,Shan Masood,etc, these are the players who probably the best in Pakistan and they have been given plenty of chances bit to no avail.All other stuff, in the domestic circuit ,may not be like them because of the low standard of domestic cricket.NZ bowlers are relatively newer than pakistani bowlers but they containing pakistani batting very well,I feel New Zealanders are playing home series.Ross Taylor was out of form before this tour I knew Pakistan would help him to regain his form.

Test and ODI are different ball game. The selectors keeps on trying Younus Khan, Asad Shafiq and Nasir Jamshed. Umar Akmal is the perfect ODI player but he is in and out which is not helping his condidence. The selectors needs to bring back the consistent Fawad Alam who can perform in a crisis situation. Sohaib Maqsood needs to be included as he is a good ODI player.

Fitting result given the poor selection. Bring back Sohaib (once fit) and Fawad Alam for batting and Talha for bowling. Out of 30 man squad, here is what I see as the team:

Great Richards once said either you have a specialist for each job or you have an allrounder who is equally good wherever you need him. Anwar Ali is totally different phenomenon, he's niether a bowler nor a batsman. I never understood his inclusion. Wahab is as good a bat as him but a lot better bowler with speeds of 145.
Younis Khan should retire himself, he isn't good for ODI. Its not about average or when he scores or not. Its because he is too slow and it seems as if he has no shot to play. Its all nudges, snicks and awkward touches. Asad Shafiq is not a limited overs player at all, no discussion about that. Jamshed is tried a hundred times now and must bedicarded. Pakistan needs to play an attacking game by opening with Sarfraz and Ahmad Shehzad to follow with Sohaib and Umar.

I still couldn't understand what Sohail Tanveer's,Anwar Ali,Bilawal Bhatti's abilities neither they are full bowlers nor they can bat well.All rounders are like Mitchal Marsh or at least like Abdul Razzaq.

We Pakistanis should now understand that it is the most inconsistent team in the world and it is complete waste of time to watch them play cricket. They will crash out of 2015 World cup with Misbah, Younus, and Afridi, giving one excuse after the other.

well played New Zealand , deserving victory.A very competitive series throughout. Good luck for the future tour including coming WC. Pakistan better luck next time, But we need to be more confidant in chase if we expect any better result in coming world cup.Total was very much achievable nit Ahmed Shehzad played too slow and consumed too many dleiviveries at that stage when Required runtime was slowly creeping up, he was selfish in his innings and there is no place for Umar akmal and Younus khan in the team that is the reason Pakistan lost the match.

The fact is that New Zealand out-played Pakistan in all departments of this game. They deserved win and conratulation to Kiwis. Our bowlers did not performs well and batsmen were simply pathetic and played like a high school kids. Loss of early wickets kept putting pressure on the batsmen in lower order and result is evident--- we lost. The team needs some changes and still there is time to get players ready for the WC, 2015. Selection for WC probables should be done keeping in mind interest of the nation.

@optimist If I was selector of Pakistan I would be scared to selected Younis Khan,Naseer Jamshed,Umar Akmal,Asad Shafiq for ODI.These guys are not fit for ODI.Why they even wasting every one time.Time for them to drop themselves.Perfect replacement should be Fawad Alaam,Babar Azam,Sohaib Maqsood,Bilawal Bhatti.No place for any any of the tested failures who have been consistent flop on ODI.

Thanks to the selectors and team management for selecting such horrible/parchi players. Players like Younis khan, Asad shafiq, Nasir jamshed, sohail tanvir and wahab riaz, I was sure such results would come. I have zero hopes in the world cup when you drop players like fawad alam who add consistency to your third rated decade behind batting line up. In the bowling dept it was about time to try someone like Tabish Khan who has been the highest wicket taker for last four years if not more. Shame on you PCB. I wonder how horrible these players would feel after being so consistent in the domestic circuit. Also Why Team management like Misbah as a captain because he is absolutely benign and has no say! I am sure the world cup results will be disastrous!

Bad choices produce defeat. No Place for Younas and Shafiq in ODI. You do not need experience people producing duck and disaster, you need new people like Sohail making 65. U Akmal be part of very game. You need people at the end and some of the bowlers may bat at 2 and 3 position.

Good work New Zealand. Although we lost the series but some of our players win the heart of Nation. Sarfarz and Haris Sohail are at top of their game. I hope they will carry on, they have lot to learn and lot to show. Even player like Afridi looks changed in this series. So, on the basis of these facts I think it was a good series for both Pakistan and NZ.

Just like our govt. PCB is also completley dysfunctional. They are destroying cricket in Pakistan by supporting parchi and undermining merit. Until they start giving chance to deserving candidates, we will not be able to build a good cricket team. We need to get rid of players like Hafeez, Nasir, Asad, Younus, Misbah from the ODI team and should bring in fresh talent like Shoaib Maqsood, Fawad Alam and more.

Here is a list of Pakistani ODI team's bits & pieces players - incomplete players. Tried many many times. Look at their batting average and bowling averages. As openers. batting average needs to be touching 40 or higher. Hence the reason for our blues.

3. Asad Shafique
4. Umar Akmal (over 100 games and still waiting for him to be consistent)
5. Wahab Riaz
6. Bilawal Bhatti
7. Sohail Tanvir
8. Shoaib Malik
9. Kamran Akmal (cannot catch for the life of him).

So, we lost to NZ who were without their 3 fastest bowlers in Southee, Trent Boult and Kyle Mills and their best batsman and captain Brendon McCullum. We were without Misbah for 3 games, so technically we were playing with an extra batsman :-). We should have won....on home ground. Imagine playing WC in Australia/NZ's swinging & bouncy pitches. WC first round exit is on the cards. No hope from this bunch and from PCB Nepotism.

This series defeat has demonstrated three things:the Pakistan selectors are clueless about team composition,younus khan,asad shafique should not be playing ODIs,and Pakistan would be incredibly lucky to make it out of the group stage in next year's world cup.

Younis Khan,Asad Shafiq,Naseer Jamshed ,Umar Akmal need to ask themselves whether they deserve place in ODI team.Based on current performance they don't deserve place in local Street team forget about national ODI team.How many chances do they deserve in ODI and they keep failing forever.Even kids would be playing better cricket them.Time to move on and have fresh blood in batting especially Babar Azaam,Fawad Alaam,Bilal Bhatti ready to fill the slots.

Dismal bowling attack. Where's the young talent coming through and the traditional fast bowling? You can't honestly tell me that in a population of 200 million cricket lovers we don't have a Milne or a Henry. Absolutely no future planning by the PCB. We just plod along reacting to losses by making sudden changes and then plod some more.

We really do not have quality upcoming players in our domestic circuit.
Only you have this lot available who have international experience but they will have to perform consistently.
Haris sohail is a find of this series and you can try Babar Azam,he is a talented young player,he has shown some good performances.Umer Akmal is following Shahid Afridi,he will take 100 more matches to learn from his mistakes.When he performed in the beginning,I thought he is a sensible player but he has disappointed me.He should be tried at no. 3 position as he is a stroke player and on Australian pitches these kind of players are successful.

.....Must read .:......the real facts....
1. WC 2007 T20I final & WC 2011 semifinal Pak team was defeated due to selfish & corrupted MISBAH UL HAQ.
2. T20I series Pak vs Eng final Pak lost that match due to slow Misbah.
Umar Amin played most matches without scoring a single figure in ODI.
Asad Safique & Azhar Ali always useless in ODI.
Nasir Jamshed & Hafeez should play county cricket.
Umar Akmal & Sehzad need a break after performing in last match because in next match they use to out on 00.
Wahab Riaz ....always give above than 70+ run in each & every match.

I don't understand why would any Pakistani want Fawad Alam back because he is too weak. He can not even reach the boundary. I wonder what happened to Hammad Azam? He played really well as under 19s. I hope PCB is not waiting till he turns about 35 years old before bringing him in.

England replaced Cook with Eoin Morgan just now for the world cup.....I don't know why PCB can't take the same decision to replace Misbah with Afridi. It will be really good for Pakistan and there is no harm in including Misbah as a batsman

I don't understand why Asad Shafiq, YK, Misbah are playing in the same game. Asad Shafeeq is not an ODI player, he will never be an ODI player. YK can be on the bench. He played 5 ODI and didn't win one game for Pakistan. Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed should be out as well. They should bring in sohaib Maqsood, Fahad Alam. Yaser shah should have been given a chance in the last ODI. YS is young and wants to do well, support him and he is the future of Pakistan spin and he can bat a bit. Moin khan needs to wake up and say enough is enough.

@Malik I did't quit get what you were saying, but I think you are upset about why we played the match. I am from Peshawar, and I guess I am hurt more by the mass murder more than anyone else outside KPK. I did not watch the game either. But I am glad that we did not give in to the terrorists by postponing the game and at the same time gave the proceeds from the game to the affected families. However, I am most upset at the self righteous among us who would not do a thing about this terrorism, like rising against the mullah in their mosques who spit venom form the pulpit or donate to the victims, among other things.

Fawad Alam should have been in the team. Look at his batting average folks. I am confident that he would have done a much better job than Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafiz, Umer Akmal, Asad Shafiq, and Yunus Khan. Umer Akmal is so so unpredictable and unreliable and Asad Shafiq is not an ODI or T20 player. Time is up for Akmal brothers. The team had a perfect opportunity to try him (Fawad Alam) when Misbah was out due to injury. I strongly encourage the team management to include him in the World Cup squad.
