ISLAMABAD: Prominent economist Dr Sarfraz Khan Qureshi passed away here on Wednesday. He was 75.

Dr Qureshi was former director of Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), and president of Pakistan Society of Development Economists.

He had a PhD from Harvard University and was a leader of the development economists community.

His Namaz-i-Janaza will be held on Thursday at 1:15pm at Imambargah Al-Sadiq, G-9/2, and will be buried at H-11 graveyard.

He joined PIDE in 1962 as a staff economist and retired as a director in 1999.

In recognition of his services, he was awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2004.

According to his friends, his younger son, Baqir Raza Qureshi, vice president of J.P.Morgan on Wall Street in the US, passed away due to a brain aneurism last month. Dr Sarfraz Qureshi never really recovered from that loss. He leaves behind a widow, a son, Dr Imtiaz Qureshi, and two daughters.
