KARAK: The people have demanded shifting of the fruit and vegetable market out of the Karak city and widening of the old bazaar road to minimize their hardships.

The demand was made at a meeting held here on Tuesday. After the meeting, social and political activists, including Iqbal Khan, Mohammad Altaf and Haq Nawaz, told reporters that the road leading through the fruit and vegetable market to the old bazaar was too narrow to sustain the pressure of the goods vehicles and rush of people.

They said that wrong parking caused frequent traffic blockades in the city, causing agony to citizens. The activists said that roadsides had been occupied by the small time vendors and pushcarts and the residents of the old bazaar, particularly the women and children, faced problems while coming out and going into their houses.

They demanded that the old bazaar road should be widened and the fruit and vegetable market be shifted out of the city to an open place to give relief to the local people.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Shoaib Jadoon has warned of taking stringent action against profiteers and hoarders. He said that availability of daily use commodities at official rates would be ensured at any cost.

This he said while addressing a meeting of the price control committee. Traders association’s president Tahir Ayub, general secretary Ghulam Rabbani, assistant commissioners of three tehsils, DSP headquarters and food department officials were in attendance.

Mr Jadoon said that traders should ensure display of official pricelists at their shops, and warned that overcharging and hoarding would not be tolerated and no substandard commodities would be permitted to be sold in the market.

The deputy commissioner also showed resentment over wrong parking and presence of pushcarts in the heart of the city, and directed launch of anti-encroachment operation.

GAS SUPPLY SUSPENDED: Gas supply from Gurguri was suspended to the Takht-i-Nusrati tehsil and other districts owing to a fault in the main transmission line in Kanda area.

The SNGPL sources informed Dawn on Tuesday that gas supply had been suspended to entire Takht-i-Nusrati tehsil, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank, DI Khan, Bakhar and other parts of the country. — Correspondent
