TAXILA: An officer of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) was killed when a patrolling car came under fire here on Wednesday night.

Circle head of the motorway police, Iftikhar Ahmed, told mediapersons that the car was on routine patrol on G.T. Road when gunmen opened fire on it from behind near the Taxila bypass at around 11pm. As a result, fine collection official Zeeshan Zahid, 20, who was sitting on the rear seat of the car, was hit in the head by a bullet and died on the spot. Two other officials of the motorway police - Lal Badshah and Mohammed Afzal - remained unhurt.

The attackers managed to flee from the scene. Police investigators, on the condition of anonymity, said it was a terrorist attack, adding that the car received 15 bullets and the police officials were targetted.
