PESHAWAR: A policeman was killed in a terrorist attack on their mobile van on Mashogagar Road in Badhber area here on Thursday. One suspected terrorist was also killed in the ensuing exchange of fire.

Officials said that a group of armed men opened fire on a police mobile van in the morning. As a result, special police officer Sanjab Khan, resident of Bacha village of Khel Badhber, sustained serious bullet injuries and he succumbed to his wounds while being shifted to Lady Reading Hospital. They said that one suspected terrorist was also killed when police retaliated.

An official of Badhber police station said that body of the suspected terrorist had been taken into custody and the rest of his accomplices escaped towards the tribal region.

The body could not be identified so far. “He is young and having small beard. We have recovered some medical prescriptions from his pocket, but each of the three papers carried separate names like Aamir, Adil and Arsalan,” the official said, adding that the body had been sent to local mortuary.

Meanwhile, funeral of the policeman was offered at Malik Saad Khan Police Lines, which was attended by IGP Nasir Khan Durrani, commissioner Munir Azam and deputy commissioner Zaheerul Islam.

In another development, police foiled a possible sabotage attempt and defused six hand grenades found at Ring Road in the limits of Peshtakhara police station on Thursday.

An official of the police station said that following information they called personnel of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) to defuse them. He said that the apparent target of the improvised explosive devices seemed to be the police. He said that the bombs were packed in a bag and it seemed that the terrorists wanted to shift them somewhere else in the darkness of night, but failed to do so.

KHAR: A member of peace committee and his two sons were injured in a roadside blast in Mamond tehsil of Bajaur Agency here the other day.

Officials said on Thursday that the peace committee member Haji Salam Khan and his sons were going home in their car when they came under attack in Landi Shah near Damadola, 16 kilometres from Khar.

As a result of the explosion, Slam Khan and his two sons identified as Dir Mohammad and Zainullah suffered bullet injuries. They were taken to the agency headquarters hospital in Khar where their condition is stated to be out of danger. The car was also partially damaged in the blast.

Area people and members of the peace committee reached the site of the explosion and searched for the attackers, but the miscreants had escaped by then. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, while the local people and administration officials termed it a militant attack.

“Slam Khan and his family members have played a crucial role in the restoration of peace and elimination of militants in the area,” said an official of the local administration.

Also, one person was killed and another wounded when two rival groups clashed over a land dispute in Chinar area of Salarzai tehisl in Bajaur Agency on Wednesday.

Officials said that the families of Gul Hameed and Haseeb Khan had a dispute over a piece of land since long. They said that Gul Hameed and his relatives were working in the disputed field when armed men of Haseeb Khan started firing on them, leaving Naeem Khan dead and Gul Hameed injured.
