BAHAWALPUR: Three robbers were killed in an ‘encounter’ on Tuesday in the Yazman Saddar police precincts, about 30km from here.

Police claimed that Fayyaz alias Faizi of Pakpattan, Shabbir alias Bashira of Bahawalpur and Jaffar of Vehari accompanied a team to recover stolen articles from their accomplice Ghulam Farid. When a police party was taking them to the identified place, five unidentified accomplices of the suspects riding three motorcycles attempted to get their arrested men freed.

During a crossfire, the arrested suspects were killed in firing by their accomplices.

Police claimed that none of their officials suffered injuries.

After the alleged encounter, District Police Officer Sarfraz Ahmed Falki visited Yazman and appreciated the police party.

Police claimed that the deceased were wanted in a number of criminal cases in different districts.

Police claimed that a case against the unidentified motorcyclists, who attempted to get the arrested men freed, had been registered.

PROJECTS: Islamia University Bahawalpur Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Salim Tariq has welcomed the approval of Rs850 million worth of uplift projects by the federal government’s central development working party (CDWP).

A press release issued here on Tuesday said the approvedprojects pertained to the construction of an academic block of the faculty of management sciences, the establishment of the department of civil engineering, modern laboratory of the chemistry department equipped with modern accessories and hostels for both boys and girls. Besides, 10 faculty members of management sciences and engineering faculty would be granted scholarships for study abroad.

The VC thanked the federal government and said such a hefty amount had been approved after 2007.

ELECTION PLEA: The judgement in the election petition of Makhdum Ahmed Alama Anwar, a PML-N defeated candidate in NA-192 (Rahim Yar Khan), was deferred on Tuesday owing to submission of an application by the counsel of respondent MNA Khwaja Qutubuddin of PPP.

Respondent’s counsel Malik Muhammad Aslam Channar through an application requested the tribunal headed by retired district and sessions judge Chaudhry Abdul Hafeaz.

tribunal to summon all 294 presiding officers of the polling stations for their evidence.

The tribunal adjourned the case for Sept 24 to announce verdict on the application.
