KARACHI: Two suspected robbers were shot dead in an alleged encounter in the Defence Housing Authority on Monday, officials said.

As the pair entered a bungalow situated on Khayaban-i-Badban, Phase-VII, for robbery, a police party acting on a tip-off encircled the house, said South SSP Faisal Bashir Memon. The suspects tried to escape by scaling the rooftops of the two adjoining bungalows while firing at the police. In the ‘retaliatory firing’, the suspects were killed.

Their identity could not be ascertained immediately.

Plain-clothes policemen had been deployed after receiving complaints about house robberies in the area, said the SSP-South. As the suspects appeared there and entered the house, the Gizri police were alerted about their presence, which led to the shootout.

Meanwhile, AIG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo announced a Rs10,000 reward for the police party.

Suspect dies during encounter

A suspect jumped to his death from a bridge in an attempt to escape police pursuing him in the SITE area on Monday evening, according to police.

Two suspects were allegedly looting passers-by on the Habib Bank bridge when the police party arrived there on receiving information about it, said SITE SP Fida Hussain Janwari.

One of the suspects opened fire on the policemen. In the meantime, a crowd gathered there due to which, the police fired into the air. The suspect tried to flee by jumping off the bridge, but suffered head injuries and died, added the SP. The other accomplice escaped. The dead man’s identity could not be ascertained immediately.

Teenager shot dead in Kalakot

An 18-year-old Iranian Baloch was shot dead in Kalakot on Monday, police said.

They added that Wali Wazir Ahmed was passing by the Lahoti medical store on Mewashah Road when assailants opened fire on him. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and was transported to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors declared him dead.

The victim, a rickshaw driver, had recently returned from Iran, where his family members lived, said Kalakot SHO Haji Sanaullah. The deceased was a resident of the Jhat Pat Market area.

Body found in Manghopir

A 40-year-old man was found shot dead in Manghopir on Monday, police said.

They added that the body of the man with bullet wounds on his hand and chest was found in Sultanabad near Ijtimah Gah. He was identified as Javed Iqbal, originally hailing from Rajanpur, Punjab, through the CNIC found in his pocket. The corpse was taken to the Edhi morgue after a post-mortem examination at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital as his relatives could not be traced immediately. The police found two empty casings of 0.9mm pistol at the crime scene.

Young man found murdered in Korangi

A young man was found murdered on Korangi Road, Zaman Town, police said on Monday.

They added that the body of the man with head injuries caused by a hard and blunt weapon was found near Nasir Jump. The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification after a post-mortem examination at the JPMC.

Killing in Orangi

A 34-year-old man was shot dead in Orangi Town on Monday, police said.

They added that Shahid Ashiq, riding a motorcycle, was gunned down by motorcycle-borne assailants in Sector-12-L near an Imambargah. The victim was a resident of Sector-14-A.

He worked in the area as a ‘CNICs agent’, helping people get their identity cards, and the murder might be related to that activity, said Orangi SHO Tanveer Murad. He added that the assailants had invited him for a meeting to the place where he was killed.

Man killed in Sir Syed Town

A 35-year-old man was shot dead in Sir Syed Town on Monday evening.

Fareed Ahmed Qureshi was riding a motorcycle when gunmen riding another motorbike attacked him outside Al-Haj Akhter restaurant near Nagan Chowrangi, said Sir Syed Town DSP Altaf Hussain. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The motive for the killing could not be ascertained immediately, added the officer.
