KARACHI: Sixteen names — eight boys and as many girls — belonging to 13 disciplines were finalised for the Commissioner Karachi Sports Awards for 2013 by the committee in a meeting held here on Wednesday.

The names were finalised in a meeting chaired by director Local Government, Rubina Asif, in the absence of chairman of the committee, Nasir Mahmood, on Wednesday.

To maintain the equality, the meeting decided that a sum of Rs8,00,000 that has been generated through sponsors for the awards, will be equally disbursed amongst the 16 nominees along with shields.

The meeting annulled its earlier decision under which six main and four subsidiaries awards winners were to be given a sum of Rs1,00,000 and Rs50,000 respectively.

Initiated for the first time by Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui to acknowledge the performances of local youth in sports, the awards are likely to be given at a ceremony soon.

Nominees:

Boys: Salman Khursheed and Ghulam Fareed (hockey), Mohammad Waqas (cricket), Janzaib Khan (boxing), Waleed Raza (athletics), Aahil Tharabi (table tennis), Sabir (cycling) and Abdul Jabbar aka Guldasta (malakara).

Girls: Rukhsar Rashid (football), Liya Mushtaq (swimming), Mehreen (hockey), Neha Khan (tennis), Sheza Altaf (athletics), Ayesha Noor (taekwondo), Nayab (netball) and Zunaria Pasha (basketball).
