KOHAT: The acute shortage of police personnel in the Kohat division, having borders with three tribal agencies and two districts of Punjab, is seriously hampering efforts to maintain law and order situation in the region.

Kohat division DIG Dr Ishtiaq Marwat told Dawn on Tuesday that he had been requesting the government through central police offices that at least 1,000 policemen were required for deployment at sensitive installations like sites of oil and gas companies, police stations and along the boundaries with the tribal belt.

He said that police stations were also understaffed having only five to six policemen, as a result policing in the district was severely affected. “Due to shortage of personnel, patrolling large areas, checking smuggling, conducting raids and dealing with other affairs is becoming acutely difficult,” he added.

Dr Marwat said that the government had inducted only 100 policemen on temporary basis in Kohat, Hangu and Karak districts after the sectarian violence during last Muharram, which claimed three lives.
